The Real Numbers Behind Digital Production

As an educator-led team, we believe in showing our work — especially when questions come up about how we make things. So today, a quick, honest look at the real science behind resource use in digital production.
Let's start with the basics. Rendering a short digital clip — the kind you might see in one of our character videos — doesn't harm wildlife. CGI tools have been safely rendering film and animation for decades; movies like District 9, released 17 years ago, used the same underlying technology.
So how does digital compare to everyday physical industries? The numbers might surprise you:
- 🌾 Agriculture uses roughly 118 billion gallons of water per day in the U.S. All U.S. data centers combined use about 75 billion gallons in an entire year.
- 🏗️ Urban development converts about 1 million acres of land every year — roughly 2,740 acres, or nearly 2,000 football fields, of habitat lost per day.
- 🏨 A single 300-room hotel uses over 100,000 gallons of water a day.
Context matters. We're not here to say technology has zero impact — everything does. We're here to say the picture is bigger than a single headline, and we think our community deserves the real comparison.
A little bit about where BlueBerry actually comes from: our original co-creator hand-sketched BlueBerry on paper at just 14 years old. We've simply evolved from pencil and paper to digital tools since — the character, and the heart behind him, hasn't changed a bit.
